Planning for my contents page and double page spread photoshoot

I have researched some images of popular female pop artist's to inspire me how to photograph my models for my contents page and double page spread.

I would like to provide variety within my images so I would like to have a few different images with different filters on such as black and white this will display contrast within the images in my magazine. I am going to be photographing my models from different levels to display their level of importance. And finally I am going to be photographing from different angles such as a mid shot or a full length shot to bring out certain features of my models.

My Rate Card

From previously doing some research into Rate Card's I have now created my own for my music magazine.

As my magazine is new I have not set the prices fairly as high to other magazine outlet's as no one will want to advertise in it if the prices are very high. To help me create my rate card I used the rate card that I carried research into from my previous post as a guideline for my prices. I have reduced some of my prices by £25 from those of the rate card that I researched.

In my rate card I have included prices for features such as full pages and double page spread, as I intend to display advertisements and articles on content not only relating to my magazine but to my target audience which is young female adults.

Rate Card research

What is a Rate Card?

A Rate Card is a document which contains prices and and descriptions for various advertisement placement options available from a magazine outlet.

I have carried out some research onto a rate card for a magazine. This one provides information about options available from a magazine outlet in regards to prices and functions.

This research has helped to give me an idea as what I should set my prices as when creating a rate card for my music magazine.

Planning for my contents page and double page spread

Before creating my contents page and double page spread I have completed some research into popular magazine's and the format of their contents page and double page spread to inspire me as to what I would like mine to look like.

I firstly looked at several contents pages from well known magazines such as Elle, Vogue, Billboard and Q that inspired me as to what I would like mine to look like. The one that most appealed to me was the contents page for Q magazine. I particularly liked this contents page as it provided a variety of images relating to articles featured in the magazine. I also like the use of two colours this one being red and white as it provides variety. I am hoping to create my contents page in a way similar to this one but not the same.

I then looked at several double page spread's for many well known magazines such as OK!, Cosmopolitan, Reveal, Q and GQ. One that particularly stood out to me was Q's double page spread. I firstly really liked the format of this double page spread as the text was on one page and an image relating to the text on another. I also liked the format of an interview instead of a storyline as it makes  you feel as though you are getting an insight to a one on one interview. I have been inspired by this to create my double page spread with a few features similar to this one.

Challenges facing the magazine industry

Technology

With technology developing everyday and increasing in its capability, magazine sales are affected worldwide. The likes of technology today have grown across many years and developed making peoples life's easier everyday. However there have been several factors affected by this development such as magazines. Magazines make a large amount of revenue from hard copy sales but technology is starting to decrease this. Now that technology has become so popular it enables people to access things that they could buy in their local shop or store such as newspapers and magazines saving them from taking a trip out and therefore saving them money. People can now access a digital copy of their favourite magazines online therefore meaning that they do not have to go and buy a hard copy.

Magazine companies have seen this is an issue in relation to their hard copy sales decreasing so therefore the companies have come up with solutions in order to balance the issue out. One solution being that several magazine companies have now created a digital version of their magazine to increase web views and promote their product at the same time as the internet is widely used everyday by users across the world. Without advertising many companies in the magazine industry would have failed due to the fact of increased use of the media online.

Learning from this, I am going to adapt these solutions into my Music Magazine, by ensuring that there is a digital version of my magazine available to download online as my intended target audience is young-adults who are either students or work that will be able to download a copy of my magazine online as they are always on the go.

Illegal downloads

As I stated in the previous paragraphs that technology has developed over various years this can not always be a positive development. Illegal websites provide illegal downloads some at no charge of magazines daily, which has been on going for several years. This can therefore have a negative impact on magazine companies as people will be able to download free copies of a magazine instead of paying for it in a shop or store

Remaining relevant

Remaining relevant is also another challenge facing the Magazine Industry. Magazines are read by customers who want to read what is inside the magazine or customers that have a particular interest to the particular genre of the magazine e.g. Fashion magazine. With the demand of this, magazine companies must therefore make sure that they provide efficient updated content in regards to their magazine as people want to read what is going on around the world daily and if this information is not up to date then customers will not want to buy the magazine thus meaning that revenue i lost.

Evaluation Question 2

Question 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

For my magazine I decided to choose a social group who listen to pop music including many famous pop artists such as Justin Bieber, Little Mix, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars. I also intend that my social group like to listen to new pop artists and keep up with the current charts. I have targeted young adults, interesting them in upcoming summer concerts and festivals. The age group that I am targeting is young adults who are either students or employed.  With my age group I also needed to make my magazine a reasonable price as the pay at 18 is not specifically very high and students will be on a  budget, taking all of into terms I decided to make my magazine a reasonable price of £1.60.

The cover lines that are featured on my magazines front cover also appeal to the age group of my target audience (18+) , I have got 3 cover lines on my magazine which are short and competent. My cover lines are short as people will not want to read a magazine front cover that has a lot of information displayed on the front.  The coverlines on my magazine also give the reader an insight as to what articles are inside the magazine that they may be interested in reading. Whilst focusing on other aspects of my magazine I received feedback on the layout of my magazine the feedback that I received was that my layout was messy, so I changed the layout of my magazine by making it look neater.

The images that I have used also help to attract my target audience. Firstly the model on my magazine is a young adult and this links in with the age group of my target audience. This will attract woman’s attention if they see a mature young woman captured on the front cover as they will think that they can relate to her. I have also conveyed the genre of my magazine (pop) through the clothes that the model is wearing in the images and her body language. For example on my front cover my model is wearing an expensive statement fur jacket that will capture woman’s eyes. On my double page spread I dressed the model in a more edgy and chic look, she is seen wearing a black dungaree dress with a plain white top underneath and old school Vans this will also appeal to woman as they like to keep up with what the celebrities are seen wearing as it inspires them.

In conclusion I believe that I have targeted a particular social group being young woman.  I have done this by the use of image’s, colour and fonts on my magazine. To meet the standards of what my intended social group target I created a lifestyle questionnaire which helped me to know exactly what my target social group want to see in my magazine.

How magazines make money

Hello,

Today I have carried out some research on how magazines make money.

Every month magazines produce information dedicated to a particular topic. There are a vast variety of magazines including sports, fashion, beauty, music and gardening. Magazines are a business and they must generate income and stay profitable. There are three main ways that magazines make money these are circulation and subscription, classified advertising and print advertising.

Circulation and Subscriptions'

When somebody buys a magazine from a newsstand, the profit made from that sale makes money for the magazine. This type of sale is called a single copy sale, however the money made from this sale is very little profit when including how much it costs to make the magazine, the cost of transporting it to the newsstand and the commission the magazine company must pay the newsstand company for providing the space to sell it's magazine.

However magazines do make a larger profit from subscriptions. The profit earned is far greater than a single copy sale as the magazine is transported directly to the consumer. Magazine companies have the address of the consumer, so they can make a pitch to renew the subscription when it is due, magazine companies can also pitch any other magazines that they produce that they think would be of interest to the consumer.

Classified Advertising

In every magazines there is more than likely to be a classified section which display's want ads. A want ad is a classified advertisement in a magazines or a newspaper. Magazines sell want ads by the word or line, the ad's can be quite expensive in popular well known magazines which have a large circulation. But however moderate magazines with a smaller circulation can command large prices to display the want ad's, if they target a specific area or a group of people. This is also another source of income for the magazine companies.

Other Advertising

Magazines can make money by allowing advertisers to use its unused space throughout the magazine, this includes the covers and inside the front and back cover. It is very common for the full page back cover of a magazine ad to run several thousand pounds or more popular in magazines with national coverage. Not only does the magazine make money with this form of advertisement, it also helps o fill up the pages by placing ad's in any unused space on pages around the story line, this way the magazine looks better and it's income increases.

Mock up of Music Magazine contents page and double page spread

Hi there,

Here I have designed a mock cover for what I intend my contents page to look like.

Here is a mock up design of what my double page spread is going to look like.

Final School Magazine Front Cover

Hi there,

Here is the final design of my school magazine. The front cover follows my plan of the mock up design that I created. I have worked on certain elements that a magazine has such as the masthead, cover lines, central image, tagline, pug, puff, bar code, edition number, price and date.

My final front cover image's

Hello!

In today's lesson I took some image's for the front cover of my magazine. I have used Darcey Walmsley and Hannah Smith as my models. I have chosen to dress both of the models in different outfits to give variety to the image. I have decided to use a single shot of one model as the front cover image and I am going to use a shot with both of the models in for my contents page. I have chosen to use a single shot as my front cover image because I want the audience to focus on only one model.

Stay tuned to see my progress!

Planning for my photo shoot

Hello!

Today I am planning out my photo-shoot for the front cover of my magazine.

I will be shooting one of my friends Darcey Walmsley in front of a green screen.

Darcey will be wearing black leggings and a fluffy jacket, I have chosen this outfit because I want the shoot to be portrayed as classy but simple at the same time.

Stay tuned to see my progress!
